Welcome to the Oceanside Protection Society Website

Mission: The Oceanside Protection Society exists to preserve the coastal village environment of Oceanside, OR and the characteristics that make Oceanside a unique place to live, visit, and own property; through fact finding, fund raising, education, and action; organizing citizen support of community planning and effective code enforcement. OPS replaces the Oceanside Zoning Protection Fund administered by Oregon Shores as a vehicle for funding activities directed toward this purpose.

Current goals and projects (not in necessarily in priority order):

  • Establish the public ownership of Oceanside’s “Town Square”.
  • Reopen the Childrens’ Playground on Chinook Avenue.
  • Monitor and provide information about community projects such as the new wastewater treatment plant and Green Crow’s expansion of quarries in our neighborhood.
  • Monitor and speak out against activities that violate established land use ordinances, such as overbuilding of small lots.
  • Work with the Oceanside Neighborhood Association to further selected projects of that organization.
  • OPS has also been involved with the Emergency Preparedness Plan or Map Your Neighborhood. We donated the cost of reproducing the MYN brochures for Oceanside. [Watch this space for more information on the MYN program.]
OPS donated the generator that has been installed at the chapel. The chapel will be a shelter for the community and the staging area for the fire department in case of a community wide emergency.OPS provided legal support in the Anchor Tavern remand hearing as a final attempt to seek a just outcome from Tillamook County. As in the past, our arguments were not heard and the words of outsiders regarding the impact of the expanded building were believed rather than the words of Oceansiders. Columbia Bank can attempt to sell its toxic asset clear of any legal barriers.

We will only take such positions when we are convinced that they represent the consensus of the community. By adding our voice to the Oceanside Neighborhood Association, for example, we seek to ensure that Oceansiders will be heard. Because funds donated to OPS are tax deductible, we have a unique ability to help with community projects, such as the proposed “gateway feature” under consideration now by the ONA.

Another activity we are considering is building a reserve to provide funds for technical and legal assistance if and when Green Crow Corporation completes it application to Tillamook County for permits allowing activation of the 200 Line Quarry above our village. Funds donated to OPS for the reserve will be tax deductible.
